| Sikhote-Alin — Commerative Stamps
In honor of the 10th Anniversary of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite shower (February 12, 1957), the Soviet Postal Authority produced a limited edition of commemorative postage stamps bearing a denomination of 40 kopeks. The central element of the stamp’s design is a much-celebrated painting by P.I. Medvedev, who witnessed the fireball’s descent from approximately 75 miles away, in Iman, Siberia. Medvedev’s rendering, the most famous image of this cataclysmic event, bears a semblance to a tornado. Witnesses described the phenomenon as terrifying—explosions and shock waves accompanied by the nightmarish vision of a churning, tortured sky. A smoke trail reportedly hung in the sky for hours following this massive meteorite shower—60 years ago today. This is a rare, complete sheet of 72 stamps in mint condition. There are 6 rows of 12 stamps each. Sheet measurement: 270mm x 380mm (10.5 x 15in) Estimate: $900 - 1,300 |
