| Sikhote-Alin Meteorite — Extraterrestrial Amulet With Naturally Formed Hole Iron, coarse octahedrite Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia This is the final meteorite in this offering that originated from the famed fireball that pounded Siberia’s Sikhote-Alin Mountains. Dappled with scores of tiny regmaglypts—the aerodynamic flight markings which are diagnostic of a freshly fallen iron meteorite—this elongated, totem-like specimen is in fact a crystal of nickel-iron that was shorn apart along its crystalline planes. It is clear this event occurred in the upper atmosphere because the torch-like sculpting of atmospheric frictional heating smoothed what would have otherwise been sharp edges to this now softly rectangular mass. In addition, this meteorite has a naturally formed hole near its tip, a rarity. With a steel-gray fusion crust and natural oxidized patina, this is a select, highly animated specimen from one of the most frightening phenomena of all time. 109 x 29 x 17mm (4.25 x 1 x 0.75in) and 158.8 grams Estimate: $900 - 1,200 |
